Department of Biomedical Science and Veterinary Public Health
The Department of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Public Health is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and is responsible for undergraduate and post-graduate education and research on pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, immunology, virology, bacteriology, food safety, parasitology and epizootology.

Development of transgenic Caenorhabditis elegans to understand drug resistance in parasitic roundworms
Description:
We are looking for a PhD student in the subject field biomedical sciences, with a special focus on molecular parasitology. Resistance against anthelmintics (worm-specific drugs) is well established problem among parasitic worms of livestock but is also an emerging problem in human medicine. The large intestinal roundworms (Ascaridida) such as equine parasite Parascaris univalens, porcine parasite Ascaris suum, poultry roundworm Ascaridia galli and human parasite Ascaris lumbricoides is of concern for animal and human health. Currently no in vitro model is available for pathogenic roundworms.

Our hope is that the knowledge from this project will generate novel understanding about molecular biomarkers, to be applied in sustainable control programs for monitoring anthelmintic resistance in ascarid roundworms of horses, livestock and humans. Moreover, the C. elegans expression system for further studies of drug resistance in this parasite genera. This project is a collaboration between the Department of Biomedicine and Veterinary Public Health, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), and Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Uppsala University (UU).

Tasks:
This is a molecular project with the aim to understand the molecular mechanisms of anthelmintic resistance by developing an in vitro transgenic lines of the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, using the equine roundworm, P. univalens, as a model worm of Ascaridida. Selected candidates genes, evaluated from RNA-seq data, from the horse roundworm is expressed in C. elegans. The transgenic C. elegans are exposed to increasing concentration of anthelmintic drugs and the function of candidate genes is studied in response to drug treatment.

Qualifications:
The applicant must meet the formal requirements to be admitted to PhD education at SLU. Adequate educational background could for example be a degree on master's level in the fields of molecular biology or biochemistry. Previous experience of molecular biology-methods and RNA-seq data is desirable, but not a requirement. A strong command of written and spoken English is essential. Excellent collaborative skills, high motivation and enthusiasm are important, as well as ability to work both independently and in a team. For this recruitment, candidates will mainly be ranked based on a qualitative evaluation of the candidate 's competence, skills, and judged capacity to successfully carry out a PhD education.

Place of work:
