YKI is launching new research projects with industrial financing and seek:

PhD Student - Wetting, spreading and penetration in relation to surface design in inkjet printing

YKI is starting a research project in cooperation with Mid-Sweden University (MiUn) and five industrial partners with financing from VINNOVA, the Swedish agency for innovation systems in its program targeted for the Forestry-based technology sector. The project is called Next Generation Substrates for Inkjet Printing. One PhD student will be placed at YKI and one at MiUn.

Project description
Novel inkjet coatings, consisting of silica pigments with nanopores, have been developed at YKI in a previous project. Here, inkjet coatings with nanometer and micrometer pores especially designed for inkjet printing will be synthesized and characterized. Wetting, spreading and penetration measurements, also using new contact angle techniques in the picoliter droplet range, will be use to characterize the interaction with both pigment-coated and uncoated paper substrates. Spectroscopic investigation of ink-paper interaction and ink distribution in paper will be used to quantify the chemical substances laterally and vertically in the paper substrates.

Design of sound experiments, laboratory skills and characterization will be the key elements of this PhD. Therefore, the candidates' skills must be multi-disciplined, with a strong background in chemistry or materials science and a strong preference for additional experience in colloid and surface science, papermaking and skillful use of combinations of advanced scientific instrumentation. Furthermore, the applicants should be energetic, highly motivated and possess excellent communication skills.

You will be employed by and based at YKI in Stockholm. Part of the work will be conducted at the laboratories of participating industrial and academic partners.

Estimated starting date for the appointment is 14 January 2008 and it is planned for four years. The salary will follow the conditions that KTH has for doctoral positions (presently starting at 21 200 SEK/month). You will be covered by the regular employment based benefits such as health benefits.
