Project description
Soft magnetic materials play a crucial role in enabling the efficient operation of the next generation of power electronics and rotating electrical machines. However, commercially available magnetic materials have their limitations, especially in high-frequency electrical devices, due to their restricted mechanical strength and high core losses. As a result, finding alternative magnetic materials that can perform efficiently in these conditions is necessary.

The aim of this thesis work is to develop novel and high performance soft magnetic materials for energy conversion systems. A sustainable discovery approach which relies on accelerated experimental and theoretical methodologies, e.g., additive manufacturing, thermodynamic modelling, machine learning, etc. will be used.

The techniques for materials characterization and property evaluation include x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analyzer, magnetometer, atomic/magnetic force microscopy, etc. This is an interdisciplinary research project, and you will be collaborating with researchers in different disciplines not only at Chalmers but globally.

Information about the division and the department
The main competencies at the department of Industrial and Materials Science are found in the areas of: Human-Technology Interaction, Form and Function, Modeling and Simulation, Product Development, Material, Production and in the interaction between these areas. The research develops the industrial process, from need to finished product while creating added value. To combine skills throughout the whole chain distinguishes the department both nationally and internationally. Here we gather internationally prominent researchers, in dynamic and outstanding research environments, as well as in national and international research networks.

The Division of Materials and Manufacture is a part of the Department of Industrial and Materials Science. The division covers the entire value chain from materials design, processing and characterisation to machining of primarily materials. The division is collaborating closely with other universities and research institutes and is implementing industry-academia partnerships through collaborative projects and strategic initiatives. It also hosts the national competence centre CAM2 (Centre for Additive Manufacturing - Metals).

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as PhD student is to pursue your doctoral research related to the project. You are committed to conduct independent and original scientific research, to report on this research in peer reviewed publications and conferences, and to assist in the supervision of research projects for both bachelor and master students. Collaboration within Chalmers and with research groups at other universities and with companies is also required. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to maximum 20 percent of working hours.

Qualifications
You must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in materials science, physics, or an equivalent degree, with a background and interest in one or more of the fields such as additive manufacturing, magnetic materials, materials characterization, applied physics, and machine learning. Experience in Multiphysics simulation, machine learning, and computer languages such as Python and C is a merit. The candidate is expected to have an excellent academic record and should be able to work in an interdisciplinary environment in close collaboration within and outside Chalmers.

To be successful, you need to be highly motivated, have a problem-solving attitude and capability to work independently as well as in teams. In addition, the position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
