The research group in Systems Engineering and PLM at the department of Product and Production Development, division of Product Development, is since a decade established as an internationally well recognized and nationally leading research group with strong networks in both academy and industry. The groups' core competence is design theory and methodology, product modeling and product data management within the framework of Integrated Product Development, Systems Engineering and Product Lifecycle Management. All research is conducted in cooperation with industry within the Wingquist Laboratory and the Wingquist Laboratory VINN Excellence Centre ( http://www.chalmers.se/ppd/wingquist-en) .
Job description
You will be working in a research project together with industrial partners in the Wingquist Laboratory VINN Excellence Centre.
The project focuses robust interfaces in product and production system platforms. Modern product and production development strategies, based on product families, platforms and modules allow for reuse of solutions and faster development. To be able to fully take advantages of such philosophies, configurable product structures and new ways to design and configure geometrical interfaces are needed. In the project a platform definition based on knowledge carrying sub-systems has been adopted. This approach provides much more configuration flexibility than a part based defined platform. Managing geometrical interfaces in such a knowledge based platform architecture context is focused in the proposed project. The goal is to develop strategies, methods and tools to support design of robust geometrical interfaces in the framework of robust configurable platform architectures.
You will be part of an international research environment for up to five years while you expand your knowledge of the field and write your doctoral thesis. This gives opportunities for many inspiring conversations, a lot of interesting work and some travel.
The position is limited to at most five years. Usually, a PhD student will spend about 80 percent of his or her time on graduate studies (1/4 graduate courses and 3/4 thesis project), and maximum 20 percent on undergraduate teaching.
Qualifications
The successful applicant should have a MSc degree with a background in Product Development, Production Engineering, Mechatronic Systems or Automation. Experience of system modeling and programming is appreciated. The applicant should be interested in pursuing innovative results in developing engineering tools for platform modeling and configuration. Teamwork and presentation skills, as well as fluent English, are necessary requisites.
Application procedure
The application shall be written in English, maximum of one A4 page containing your specific qualifications for the position
