Project description
The project is a new collaboration between BioEnv and Mathematical Sciences at University of Gothenburg/Chalmers Technical University.
The project aims to develop alternative tools to assess synergistic mixture effects between different classes of chemicals on fish biomarkers.
The project combines state-of-the-art experimental studies in the laboratory with mathematical modeling, factorial design and mathematical statistics.
The PhD project focuses on laboratory studies in cultured fish cells exposed to mixtures of different classes of chemicals.
The PhD project involves close collaboration with mathematicians.
The PhD project involves collaboration with the dCod-program at University of Bergen, Norway and the International Scientific Network within this program.
Job assignments
The main task is to conduct the PhD thesis work under supervision, which includes development of the PhD student?s methodology experience, analytical skills, and theoretical depth and breadth. Techniques used within the project include cell culturing, quantitative real-time PCR, immunochemical techniques, enzyme kinetics and efflux studies. The experimental part involves exposures of cultured fish cell-lines in vitro and fish in vivo to mixtures of different classes of chemicals. These classes of chemicals include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides, biocides, hormones and pharmaceuticals.
The studies will be conducted mostly as laborative studies. Shorter periods may also be spent as lab work in Norway or another country. Specific research topics associated with the research project include mixture toxicity (cocktail effects), detoxification mechanisms, biomarker responses, endocrine disruption, bioinformatics, systems biology, mathematical modelling, factorial design and mathematical statistics.
