Information about the division and the project
The Division of Subatomic, High-Energy and Plasma Physics performs research on theoretical and experimental subatomic physics, mathematical and high-energy physics, plasma and fusion physics, as well as nuclear physics. This diversity of research topics allows us to connect fundamental questions about the particles and forces governing our Universe to energy-related research. The methods of our investigations are also diverse and complementary, and range from theory and computer simulations to experiments in subatomic physics.

The Plasma Theory group within the Division conducts research on acceleration and radiation generation in magnetic fusion, laser-produced and astrophysical plasmas. The potential applications range from cancer therapy and material diagnostics, through lightning initiation, to improved design of magnetic fusion devices for energy production.

This PhD project is concentrated on a high priority area for the success of reactor-scale fusion devices: the dynamics and confinement of runaway electrons in plasma-terminating disruptions.

This advertisement is part of a concerted Phd call where the Department of Physics is hiring five Phd students. The other available positions can be found here.

Major responsibilities
The aim of this PhD project is to develop theoretical and numerical models to simulate runaway electron dynamics in the presence of material injection and magnetic field perturbations, and to apply these models in order to seek runaway electron avoidance and mitigation methods for future high-current fusion devices.

As a PhD student, you are employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. A maximum of 20% of your time will be devoted to other duties than your PhD studies, mainly teaching. The remaining time will be devoted to your own courses and research within the research topic, and you are expected to obtain a PhD within a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

In addition to the qualifications mentioned in the general text of this call, the ideal candidate for this specific PhD position has a strong background and a genuine interest in plasma physics (attested by publications or participation in conferences). Excellent analytical and communication skills, both oral and written, and solid background in computational physics are required.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
