Project description
The Department of Technology Management and Economics at Chalmers University of Technology is looking for one PhD student in Environmental Humanities & Law - focusing on Rights of Nature. The position is based at the division of Science, Technology and Society (STS) which is a dynamic and thriving community of interdisciplinary scholars. The division researches and teaches; gender and sustainable development, environmental sociology, history of technology, history of science, the social role of the engineer, gender and technology and energy history.

We offer one full-time position in "Whoose body of Water? Rights of Nature as environmental guardianship for Sweden" a research program with funding from FORMAS, Adlerbertska and Chalmers Initiative for Sustainable Transformation.

Information about the division and the department
The Division for Science, Technology and Society (STS) focuses on the societal role of science, technology and environment in the contemporary world.

Major responsibilities
As a PhD candidate, your major responsibility is to pursue doctoral studies in relation to a specific research aim. At large, PhD studies include a number of doctoral courses, literature reviews, designing research studies, collecting and analysing empirical data, and communicating the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. The exact focus of the work will be decided in interaction with the main supervisor, in this case Environmental Humanities & Law - focusing on Rights of Nature.

As a PhD candidate you take an active role in the specific research project on Rights of Nature in preparing and organising Transition Labs and collecting empirical data, conducting analysis and presenting results. Results are expected to continuously be presented at seminars and international conferences.

The position may also include teaching in Chalmers undergraduate level courses, supervising student projects or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.

Qualifications
Master's degree with a minimum of 90 Swedish credits in Environmental Sociology, Environmental Law, Climate Justice, History of Technology, History of Science, History of Ideas, Economic History, Political Ecology, History, Science and Technology Studies, Cultural Studies or other relevant fields. Additional qualifications for applicants are Master's thesis on Environmental law, particularly Rights of Nature, as well as courses in STS, Political Ecology, History of Science, History of Technology or corresponding.

The Master's degree has to be obtained at the start of the PhD-employment (planned for September 1, 2023).

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses for you to be able to fullfill the work tasks of organise and moderate Transition Labs.

A merit for the position is experience of working with jurisprudence as guardianship at the intersection of civil society and academia in Sweden or internationally.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
