Atomic electrons are sensitive probes of the surrounding plasma environment. Within atomic astrophysics, the structure of atoms and their spectra are studied for increased knowledge of astronomical objects such as stars and emission nebulae. Analysis and diagnostics of other plasmas in e.g. fusion research depend in a similar way on a detailed understanding of the atomic structure. The methods in atomic astrophysics include laboratory experiments, atomic structure calculations and spectroscopy of astrophysical objects. Astronomical observations are developing towards near-infrared wavelengths and highly accurate atomic data are required to interpret new observations. The visual wavelength region is also of increasing interest, when the most powerful telescopes are equipped with high-resolution spectrographs for large data sets. Accurate atomic data and understanding of the atomic structure are thus of uttermost importance for astronomical observations.

A PhD position is announced to work with laboratory techniques and large-scale quantum mechanical calculations within this field, including experimental investigations and developments in optical spectroscopy as well as models and calculations for relevant atomic systems. Experiments at national and international facilities as well as analysis of astronomical spectra, where improved astronomical data are applied, may be part of the work. The position is based at Malmö University, and the student will be admitted to studies in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Science faculty, Lund University.

An employed PhD student shall primarily devote time to his/her own research training. Decisions regarding employment of PhD students can be found in Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 1-7 §§. The PhD student is expected to actively participate in the research and teaching environment.
The aim of the PhD programme is to develop the knowledge and skills required for the PhD student to independently conduct research and thereby contribute to the development of knowledge within the project. The PhD programme is worth 240 higher education credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies).

The PhD employment concerns research in atomic astrophysics using experimental optical spectroscopy and atomic structure calculations. The choice of methods depends on the atomic systems treated. Other areas are excitation processes in plasmas important to understand the physical conditions. Analysis of astronomical spectra may be part of the project. The focus is within high-resolution spectroscopy towards astronomical applications, including development of instrumentation and methods.

The PhD student will collaborate with researchers at LUMCAS (Lund-Malmö Centre for Atomic Systems), where active research in computational atomic structure calculations, laboratory spectroscopy and astrophysics contribute to a broad and stimulating environment. http://www.astro.lu.se/Research/LUMCAS/. The PhD student will also be a part of the international COMPAS (Computational Atomic Structure) group that brings together leading scientists within the research field http://ddwap.mah.se/tsjoek/compas/

The PhD student will be employed at the Department of Materials Science and applied Mathematics at Malmö University and will be admitted to research studies in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Science Faculty, Lund University.

Department of Materials Science and Applied Mathematics unites interdisciplinary education and research in mainly three areas: engineering, science and mathematics. We also offer a pre-education, the Scientific/Technical foundation year programme. Furthermore, we have active research groups in materials science, physics and applied mathematics, construction science, mechanical engineering
