PhD student Internship on heterogeneous wireless technologies for redundant industrial communication

ABB Corporate Research Center in Sweden is located in Västerås, about 100 kilometers west of Stockholm. Together with our colleagues in other R&D centers, we develop technologies for future products and services of ABB's core businesses.

Even though wireless communication has been introduced to industrial automation systems for decades, the support of redundancy is still challenging in time-critical applications. A scalable, cost-effective, and vendor-independent solution is demanded.

Research questions:
What are the essential requirements and challenges to use heterogeneous wireless technologies? How to optimize the utilization of the different technologies in a diverse environment?

Deliverables:
Demonstrator of the existing baseline solution. Proposal of improvements by novel features and methods. Demonstrator of the proposed improvements. Scientific publications.

Practical arrangement:
1 position. Start: April 2024, Duration: 3 months. Place: ABB Västerås, fully on-site.
Your responsibilities
Do literature survey
Propose fundamental improvements and theoretical analysis
Define key performance indicators (KPIs) to compare the different options
Set up experimental testbeds
Explore and compare different architectures
Implement and demonstrate the improvements for selected test cases
Systematically evaluate the KPIs before and after the proposed improvements

Your background
Suitable for PhD student in computer science, ICT, electrical engineering, or other relevant subjects
Good skills in programing
Deep knowledge about wireless communications
Good knowledge about automation networks
Shared requirements are:
Strong interests in developing new practical skills
Good problem solving, self-driven, and a team-player attitude
Good spoken and written English
