PhD student in Production Technology - Thermal Barrier Coatings for gas turbine applications. Ref. no R 2013/17

Based in Trollhättan, we have over 11 500 students and around 600 employees. Our special focus is Work Integrated Learning in both education and research, and we are one of the highest ranked universities in the country for graduate employability.

Project description: Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBC) has been developed to protect gas turbine components and to make it possible to use an operating temperature above the softening temperature of the component material. Present TBC systems consist of a metallic bond coat and usually a Yttria Partially Stabilised Zirconia (YPSZ) top coat that provides the temperature drop across the coating. The research is concentrated on increasing lifetime and lowering thermal conductivity for TBC coating systems for gas turbine applications.

The scientific work in the project: The research is focused on experimental studies. Testing and characterization of the coatings includes microstructure evaluation (OM, SEM), porosity and crack content, thermal conductivity measurement and lifetime testing. The research will gain fundamental understanding of relationships between coating microstructure, thermal conductivity and coating life-time which is important to understand the influence of material choice, coating defects, such as delaminations and pores, on heat insulation and coating failure.

Doctoral degree programme: Production Technology

Research centre: Doctoral students in Production Technology become members of the research group PTV ('Production Technology West'). This group collaborates with the engineering industry in the region at the Production Technology Centre which houses an advanced research laboratory. For more information about our research centre, go to: http://www.ptw.hv.se/extra/pod/

Job description: The research programme includes, in addition to participation in third-cycle courses, implementation of an independent thesis. Students who are employed as research students shall primarily devote themselves to their own education. A person so employed may, however, be engaged to a limited extent in education, research and administration. Such duties, before a doctorate has been conferred, may not occupy more than 20 per cent of full-time working hours. (Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100) Chapter 5 section 2). Any departmental duties (20 %) are carried out mainly in the field of Production Technology.

Qualification requirements for the doctoral programme: The basic eligibility requirements for doctoral programmes as set out in the Higher Education Ordinance are as follows:

•        A degree at master's level,

•        completed courses totalling at least 240 university credits of which a minimum of 60 at master's level or,

•        substantially equivalent knowledge gained in some other way whether in Sweden or abroad

To fulfill the special eligibility requirements for a doctoral degree in Production Technology, a student must hold a degree at master's level in a subject relevant to the doctoral degree subject. This degree may be in Production Technology or some related discipline. The eligibility requirements may be fulfilled by studies in Sweden or abroad.

A student who satisfied the eligibility requirements for doctoral programmes before 1 July 2007 (120 university credits at bachelor's level or the equivalent knowledge) will also after that date be considered to have satisfied doctoral level eligibility requirements. This regulation will cease to apply at the end of 2015.

For more information please read 3.1 and 3.2 in General syllabus of Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Production Technology, Ref. No 2011/909 B 25: http://www.hv.se/extra/pod/?id=711&module_instance=11&action=pod_show

Selection for the doctoral programme: The basic factor for selection from among qualified applicants is the ability to profit from such a programme. For more information please read 3.3 in General syllabus of Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Production Technology, Ref. No 2011/909 B 25.

Qualification requirements for the position:

•        Documented knowledge and work experience in microscopy evaluations using OM and SEM

•        Good Knowledge in ceramics for heat insulation.

•        Master of Science or licentiate degree in Material Science.

Additional qualifications that are a merit:

•        Experience of thermal spraying such as atmospheric plasma spraying

•        Experience of research work and scientific writing

Duration and terms of employment: Employment as a doctoral student shall be on an open-ended basis but not for longer than to a specific point in time and never for a period extending more than one year after receiving the doctoral degree. The initial appointment must not be for more than one year. The appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. A person may be employed as a research student for a total of not more than eight years. The total period of employment, however, may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study at the third level of higher education. (Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100) Chapter 5 section 7).

The application should be sent in through our digital recruitment system. Go http://www.hv.se/english , Job Opportunities. Link: http://www.hv.se/extra/pod/?action=pod_show&id=97&module_instance=12

The application should include:

•        CV/Personal qualifications

•        Degree project of second level of higher education

•        Degree certificate of second level of higher education

•        Other documents which the applicant wishes to invoke

The application should reach University West no later than 2013-03-31. Documents that cannot be sent digitally, should be sent to following postal address: Högskolan Väst, Personalavdelningen, 461 86 Trollhättan, Sweden. Mark the application with ref.no: R 2013/17
