Project title
A Matter of Security? Political Responses to Human Health
and Environmental Degradation.
Project description
Human health and environmental problems are political issues of global magnitude and thereby part of the process of global governance, i.e., attempts to implement policies guided by normative principles and rules adapted on the global arena as well as on the national and local political levels. This PhD-project is concerned with the process where political actors come to develop strategies regarding problems caused by the link between human health and environmental problems. Moreover, human health as dependent on a sustainable environment is a link that has become increasingly acknowledged through a widened understanding of security increasingly recognised in the international political community. The broadened security-concept is a useful point of departure and a possible tool of analysis in a study of the ongoing process where political institutions on the global, national and local level have come to handle and respond to issues of human health in relation to environmental degradation and resource scarcity. The project is part of an interdisciplinary research environment and will thus proceed and develop in collaboration with scholars from a variety of disciplines based in science, medicine and humanities. Qualified candidates for this position have graduated from advanced (1 or 2 year Masters degree) level in political science, or equivalent.
Terms of employment
The start of the position is expected to be November 1, 2008. The scholarship covers 4 years fulltime research studies leading to a PhD degree in Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Gothenburg. Normally, annual teaching duties of 20% are involved, indicating a potential prolongation of the study period up to a total of five years.
