Department of Biomedical Science and Veterinary Public Health
The Department of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Public Health is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and is responsible for undergraduate and post-graduate education and research on pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, immunology, virology, bacteriology, food safety, parasitology and epizootology.

Description:
The production/use of chemicals have increased during many decades, resulting in contamination of food and drinking water. The aim of the project is to characterize chemical/metal mixture exposure of children and adolescents in Sweden, and to elucidate if these mixtures affect child/adolescent health development. Birth weight, thyroid hormones and vaccination antibodies are used as markers of health effects. The project is a collaboration between SLU, the Swedish National Food Agency (NFA), Uppsala University, University of Gothenburg, Lund University and Stockholm University, using data from the national food consumption survey on children/adolescents "Riksmaten Ungdom" and the mother/child cohort POPUP. The goal of the project is to identify the most toxic mixtures and the chemicals/metals that are responsible for observed relations with health outcomes. The results will be an important scientific base for risk limiting decisions taken by authorities that are involved in risk management of chemicals/metals both nationally and internationally.

Assignments
Apart from required course work, important tasks are handling and processing of data from databases connected to Riksmaten and POPUP, including data on chemical/metal concentrations in blood/urine, health outcomes, food habits, lifestyle, demographics and medical factors. Important tasks also include statistical analyses of associations between different combinations of toxic chemicals/metals and health outcomes using multivariate and Bayesian statistical methods. Authoring of scientific and popular scientific articles, and communication of results at scientific meetings and to stakeholders are other important tasks.

Qualifications:
The applicant must at the time of admittance have a Master of Science (MSc) in Biotechnology/Chemical Biology or equivalent, or a MSc in toxicology/nutrition/environmental medicine, with good experience and knowledge of advanced statistical modelling. Knowledge of programing in R, Python, Matlab, or equivalent. is a requirement. Emphasis is placed on personal characteristics such as collaborative skills, high motivation and enthusiasm, as well as ability to work both independently and in a team.
