Work description

The doctoral student will pursue graduate studies in the field of Computer Science, Information Science, Data Science, specialization in Digital Humanities, with a doctoral degree as the goal. He/She will also conduct research in the field of Computer and Information Science with a particular focus on the areas of artificial intelligence in archives. The doctoral student will have the option to transfer to Library and Information Science as soon as the discipline is approved for third cycle studies.

Artificial intelligence (AI) describes a variety of digital technologies and methods for automated information processing and data mining. The processing power of AI has even been leveraged in the cultural heritage sector (thereon CHS). Emerging AI practices within the CHS are generally promising and include image and textual analysis, classification, and user experience. However, technologies adopted by the CHS are often led by private companies, leading to tools such as those using AI being inscribed with specific epistemologies, perspectives, priorities, and consequences that are dissonant with institutions where they are adopted. AI development is rarely driven by professional principles grounded in the CHS. Research should set out to integrate principles, priorities, and problematics of archival sciences into AI. An archival AI could serve institutional needs, provide innovative insights in humane AI development, and benefit society at large by improving access, representation, and credibility.

The doctoral student will participate in research and teaching activities at the Department, including the Digital Humanities Master Programme coordinated by the Department of Cultural Science at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. He/She will be actively involved in the national WASP-HS National Graduate School. The WASP-HS National Graduate School is a national research school financed by the Wallenberg Foundation. It is aimed to contribute to the diversity and inclusion of AI-related expertise and, as such, strengthen Sweden's and Europe's much-needed understanding of the challenges and consequences of autonomous systems and AI in society.
