Project title
Development of analysis and characterization methods for nanoparticles in complex samples from environment and biological material.
Project description
There is an increasing awareness that nanoparticles (NP) have adverse effects on the environment and human health, but the biological understanding is hampered by the lack of suitable methods. The aim of the PhD project is to develop, optimize and validate methods for nanoparticle analysis and physico-chemical characterization in complex samples (e.g. a filter, water samples or cell suspensions). There is a challenge of low concentration of NP in complex mixtures between natural, synthetically manufactured and incidentally produced NP. Two main approaches will be used:
1. For quantitative determinations in water samples or water based extracts a mild fractionation (Field-Flow Fractionation) will be coupled to multielement detection (ICPMS).
2. For visualization and chemical analysis of NP and their interaction with biological material electron microscopy methods will be employed and optimized.
The project will explore the boundaries between analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry and nanoscience, in close collaborations with biology.
The project is part of the multidisciplinary graduate school Miljö och Hälsa (Environment and Health) co-ordinate by Centre for Environment and Sustainability at University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology.
Qualifications
The applicants should have a strong background in chemistry with ideally courses or experience in one or more of the following subdisciplines: Analytical Chem., Environ. Chem., Colloid chemistry, Solid state chemistry or physics, soft matter physics. Experience with the instrumental techniques Field-Flow Fractionation or other type of chromatography, ICPMS, electron microscopy, light scattering is desirable.
Terms of employment
The PhD position will be a PhD studentship (utbildningsbidrag) for the first two years and then a PhD employment for the last two years. The time of the PhD position can be extended commonly one year with the departmental teaching duties.
Application procedure
The material included in the application shall consist of:
An application of a maximum of one A4 page containing your specific qualifications for the position.
