Integration and modulation of olfactory information in the antennal lobe of moths
The behaviour of moths is controlled, to a large extent, by olfactory stimuli. Moths depend principally on olfactory cues to locate mates, food source and oviposition sites. The present project aims to study integration and modulation of olfactory signals relayed from the antenna to the primary olfactory centre, the antennal lobe, in the moths Spodoptera littoralis (African cotton Leaf worm) and Manduca sexta (Sphinx moth). The focus of the project will be to evaluate the response characteristics of antennal lobe interneurons of female moths to natural plant compounds and mixtures thereof. The role of various neuromodulators will also be investigated to address questions concerning how the physiological state of the animal affects integration of olfactory information. Physiological recordings will be made using whole cell patch clamp recordings and optical imaging. Immunocytochemical and in situ hybridization techniques will be used to identify putative neuromodulators and their receptors in the antennal lobe. Qualifications: MSc in biology/ecology. Experience from chemical ecology and electrophysiological and/or optical imaging work is a merit.
Form for funding or employment: The employment as a PhD student is for 4 years of postgraduate studies

Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
