1 PhD student in the research education subject: Biology
Paenibacillus polymyxa - mycorrhiza interactions in the rhizosphere of Triticum dicoccoides
Soil microorganisms are key determinants of soil fertility and plant health. Better understanding of the interactions of these microorganisms with each other and with plants is a prerequisite for the efficient, sustainable management of soil fertility and crop production. Arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) and root and AM associated bacteria play crucial roles in plant protection and nutrient aqcuisition but the mechanisms behind their interactions are still poorly understood. The successful applicant will be part of a programme with special focus on plant-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions. These will be studied at the molecular, cellular and whole plant level, using studies of secreted enzymes, peptides and secondary metabolites involved in quorum sensing and quenching mechanisms. Forest Mycology and Pathology is one of six departments in an international environment at the newly formed Uppsala Biocenter cluster at Ultuna, SLU. About 70 researchers and PhD students work in the department with basic and applied aspects of symbiotic, pathogenic and saprotrophic microorganisms and their roles in forest- and agro-ecosystems. Applicants should have a university degree in biology/microbiology/molecular biology or equivalent. Experience/competence in the following areas is preferred: basic laboratory skills in microbiology including biofilm culturing and spectrometry, HPLC, primer design, gene cloning and expression, aiiA gene cloning in Gram positive microorganisms, microbial transformation for use with DNA reporter technology (gfp etc), genetic optimisation for ligand docking (GOLD), quorum sensing and quenching research. The selection will be based on the written application, cv, diploma/exam work, personal references and an interview. Good written and spoken English and communication/cooperation skills are essential.

Those who met the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e. had completed a programme of higher education for at least 180 Higher education credits or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of 2015."
Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
