The School of Pure and Applied Natural Sciences is part of the Faculty of Natural Science and Engineering. The research activities within this multidisciplinary school include the areas of Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, Organic chemistry, Microbiology, Aquatic ecology, Mathematics and Physics. The research group of Plant Biochemistry/Plant Biotechnology now seeks a PhD student for studies on the production of recombinant proteins by molecular farming.
The research project is part of an international collaboration with a research partner in the USA (Fraunhofer Center for Molecular Biotechnology, Newark, Delaware) with the aim to develop plant based systems for production of recombinant proteins. Of particular interest are surface proteins (hemagglutinin and neuramidase) from the influenza virus A for the development of new influenza vaccines. The student will have the unique opportunity to gain expertise in a wide range of techniques (molecular biology/biochemistry/immunology) through the bilateral supervision and exchanges between the two laboratories. Part of the experimental work of the doctoral thesis will be carried out in USA.
Project title: Production of influenza vaccines by molecular farming.
Applicants should have a Masters Degree (240hp/240ECTS) in Biology or Chemistry with a strong focus on Biochemistry and/or Cell Biology. Documented training and experience of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics will be of advantage. Basic requirements for post-graduate studies are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 9.
The Ph.D. studies are limited to 4 years (100%) but may be extended to 5 years through teaching at the undergraduate level. Successful completion of the post-graduate studies will lead to a PhD in Biochemistry. During the first half of the studies (two years full-time) you will be paid by a post-graduate study scholarship (“utbildningsbidragâ€?) and a PhD position (‘doktorandtjänst’) starting from the beginning of the third year. The starting point for the Ph.D education is flexible and may be negotiated.
