Changes in bone metabolism during and after lactation in women at risk of low vitamin D status
Project description:
The primary aim of the project is to study short- and long-term changes in bone mineral status and internal bone architecture during and after lactation in fair-skinned and dark-skinned women living in Sweden. The second aim is to investigate whether factors, such as maternal nutrition status, hormonal status, life style and environmental exposure may influence these changes. Thus, fair-skinned women and dark-skinned women wearing veil will be studied longitudinally from the third trimester until 18 months after delivery. Non-pregnant non-lactating women will give comparative data for changes over the corresponding time. Bone mineral status and internal bone architecture will be assessed by high-resolution computer tomography, and dual x-ray absorptiometry. Blood and urine samples will be collected for hormonal analyses. Dietary intake and life style will also be recorded. The study will provide a better understanding the changes in bone mineral status and quality during and after a reproductive cycle and the influence factors (e.g. vitamin D status).
The project is part of the multidisciplinary graduate school Miljö och Hälsa (Environment and Health) coordinated by Centre for Environment and Sustainability at University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology. Terms of employment: two years of "utbildningsbidrag" and two years of "doktorandanställning" is guaranteed as PhD student.
Desired background: knowledge within the field of nutrition. Interest in laboratory work is an advantage.
