The Department of Information Technology (www.

it.uu.se) holds a leading position in research as well as teaching at all levels. The department has about 280 employees, including 120 senior faculty and 110 PhD students. More than 4000 students are enrolled annually.

Duties/Project description
The Department of Information Technology is opening one PhD student position for a highly motivated individual interested in conducting outstanding research in the area of ultra-low power sensor-actuator networks.

50 billion devices are expected to be connected in 2020, many of these sensors and actuators. If these devices are battery-driven we will have huge problems with maintenance. In order to enable battery-free Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, IoT devices need ultra-low power consumption.

The Uppsala Networked Objects (UNO) group is investigating several technologies for low-power consumption including backscatter where sensing devices modulate their information on top of existing wireless signals. The task of this project is to apply these or related technologies in sensor-actuator networks by developing new protocols, new hardware designs and applying the technology in new exciting application domains such as sensor-actuator networks.

Requirements
The candidate should have a Master of Science in computer engineering, electrical engineering or equivalent, ideally with a strong background in hardware, low-level software and wireless communication. Experience with developing sensor node hardware, energy harvesting, backscatter or RFID is a plus.

The position is for at most five years, and includes department duties (mainly teaching) at a level of at most 20%, as well as course participation. Good English communication skills, both spoken and written, are required.

Application
The application should include a description of yourself, your research interests, reasons for applying for this particular PhD position and past experience (max.3 pages), a CV, copies of relevant university degrees and transcripts, relevant publications, a copy of your MSc thesis (or a summary in case the thesis is ongoing) and other relevant documents. Candidates are encouraged to provide up to three letters of recommendation and contact information to reference persons. We would also like to know your earliest possible date forstarting.

Please note that applications can only be accepted via the web interface link below (and not via email).
