Project description
Quantum technologies today make it possible to control atoms and ions through laser cooling, isolating them from the surrounding environment. As a result, their discrete energy levels become extremely sharp and well defined. This technology has not only improved on the current microwave clocks, but it also heralds a new generation of quantum optical clocks, whereby the frequency reference (and hence time) is derived from an optical transition instead of microwave. As a result of this four-order-of magnitude jump in frequency, more oscillations can be counted per unit of time, and the same accuracy as with microwave clocks can be reached at a fraction of the integration time (reducing it from days to seconds).

This project will investigate chip-scale frequency comb technology (microcombs) for the development of portable quantum optical clocks in the future. Microcombs are a disruptive photonic technology that allow for the generation of a frequency comb in a chip. Photonic integration brings highly desirable features such as miniaturization, stability, low-power consumption, and the possibility for low-cost fabrication. This project will provide a significant leap forward towards the practical deployment of novel portable clocks that capitalize on the unique features of quantum mechanics. This is a highly interdisciplinary project that builds upon a long-standing successful collaboration, bridging expertise in nano- and microfabrication technology, nonlinear optics, ultrafast laser science, and metrology, making an optimal use of the complimentary competences at Chalmers and the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE).

Information about the division and the department
The Photonics laboratory at the Microtechnology and Nanoscience Department (MC2) is a dynamic and creative group with about 30 members working in an international and collaborative atmosphere. We perform both curiosity-driven and applied-research in the areas of optoelectronics, nanophotonics, and fiber optic systems. We enjoy a state-of-the-art laboratory for fiber-optic communications and have access to in-house cleanroom facilities to manufacture photonic devices.

Major responsibilities
You will get training in advanced ultrafast laser technology. The work involves numerical modeling and hands-on experiments with laser frequency comb systems. You will have room to develop and contribute with your own ideas. Although most of the work will be carried out at Chalmers, it is expected that you will have a close collaboration with the partners from RISE.

You will have a contractual relation with RISE, but your PhD studies and the research will be mainly carried out at Chalmers. The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research project. In addition, the position will normally include 10% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

Qualifications
You should have a Master's degree (or equivalent) in Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering or similar. Experience with photonic integrated circuits (either simulation, fabrication or testing) is a merit.

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
The PhD student position is a full-time employment position limited to 4 years.
