The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 38 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The EU H2020-ITN-ETN project Plant.ID on molecular identification of plants is a European training network aimed at providing 15 PhD fellows across nine European host institutions with excellent training through a network of leading academic experts, museums, governmental and industry partners in the field, using an intensive program with network-wide training events, intra-network supervision and secondments.

At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organisation from genes, individuals and populations, to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics and combinations of these fields in order to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment.

The department is placed at three different localities: in the Gothenburg Botanical garden, at Medicinareberget in Gothenburg, and at the marine research station Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Infrastructure-Kristineberg. The current position is placed at in the Gothenburg Botanical Garden.

Project description
"Polyploid phylogenetics under the multi-species coalescent."
Polyploidy is an important process in plants, accounting for a large proportion of speciation events. Many important crops are polyploid. We have previously contributed to the methodology where multi-locus sequence data can be used to infer the phylogenetic networks, while gene tree variation due to multispecies coalescent (MSC) stochasticity is taken into account. In the MSC model, species have a precise mathematical definition, which is fundamentally different from species as a taxonomic rank. For diploids, we have used the MSC model to account for uncertainties in species delimitation.

In this project, we will merge these two models in order to reconstruct the phylogenetic history of Silene sect. Physolychnis. Previous work has revealed the general pattern by which the polyploids have formed, and in this project we will identify the number of polyploid hybridizations between MSC lineages, as well as the extant MSC lineages.

Objective: A phylogenetic network depicting the speciation events in Silene sect. Physolychnis. This will provide underlying information for an updated taxonomy of the group. A database of DNA sequences that can be used for identification of DNA extracted from for example ice/soil samples will be produced, enabling reliable taxon identification and dating of polyploidization events.

Job description

• Manage and carry through your research project
• Take PhD courses within the Plant.ID network
• Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
• Participate in international congresses and Plant.ID network meetings
• Stay at a research institution abroad for the secondment(s)
• Teach and disseminate your research

Job conditions
The PhD student will be appointed under an employment contract with a competitive salary and mobility allowance at the host institution. The fellow is expected to start in April 2018. Additional funding for research and participation in courses, workshops, conferences, etc. is ensured. All 15 PhD students in the Plant.ID project will be enrolled in a doctoral program, with the specific intent that it results in a Ph.D. degree and scientific publications.
