The Division of Fluid and Experimental Mechanics within the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) conducts research and teaching in the field of hydropower. Hydropower is the largest source of renewable energies in the world and accounts for about 17% of the electricity production worldwide. It is facing new technical challenges with the introduction of intermittent renewable energy resources, refurbishment of aging machines, adapting to the climate changes and satisfying new regulations.

The Division of Fluid and Experimental Mechanics offers a Ph.D. position in the subject fluid mechanics with application to hydraulic turbines. The position is part of a larger European project aiming to increase the flexibility of hydropower named HydroFlex.

Subject description
The subject fluid mechanics works with turbulent, multiphase and porous flow coupled to industrial manufacturing methods, flow optimization and flow design for energy applications as well as magneto-hydrodynamic. The Division has via the John Field Laboratory access to state of the art measurement methods and large computational resources.

Duties
The project aims to develop a novel technique to mitigate the pressure pulsations found in Francis turbines during the part load operations. The project is mainly numerical. Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) will be used to develop and assess the capabilities of the novel technique. Once developed, the technique will be tested on a Francis model turbine. The project implies close collaboration with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway.

The Ph.D. position is four years. Some teaching and subject related responsibility may be included.

Qualifications
You should have 300 credits in engineering physics, mechanical engineering, space technology, energy technology or equivalent of which 60 credits at the advanced level with several courses linked to fluid mechanics. Applicants should also have a good knowledge of speech and write in English. Knowledge of CFD, hydraulic turbines and vortex flows is a merit.
