Department of Ecology
We conduct internationally strong research and education aimed towards sustainable forestry, agriculture and conservation. Our research on populations, communities and ecosystems forms the basis for our research on the effects of land use and climate on animals, plants and soil. We aim at finding solutions that will contribute to improve greenhouse gas balances, conserve threatened species, support biodiversity and ecosystem services, sustainable wildlife management, and pest management in forest and agricultural landscapes, as well as in urban areas.

Recreational values in forested landscapes - where are they and how do they relate to biodiversity?
Content:
This project aims at increasing our understanding for how to manage forests to combine recreation, production and biodiversity. Thus, it will provide knowledge valuable for decision-makers, but the number of researchers in this field is low. In this project, the Ph D student will learn to work with research questions and methods (such as spatial statistical analyses) that are widely applied in landscape ecology and forest science.

There is a need for better understanding of recreational values of forests. This project will provide such knowledge by combining existing and new data from inquiries about recreational preferences and activities with national-level forest and land-cover data. The goal is to a) analyse stated recreational preferences in relation with forest characteristics and biodiversity (especially birds); b) analyse actual recreational behaviour in relation with landscape composition and configuration, c) analyze distance from home to recreational activities and use this together with data from (a), (b), and nation-level forest data to identify hotspot areas and deficiency areas for recreation in forests. Finally, (d) landscape strategies that combine recreational values with forest production and nature conservation will be simulated. Stakeholders will be involved in the scenario development and in evaluating the pros and cons with the outcome of various scenarios.
