Job description Ph.D. programme in Computer Science

Research context
The research project is conducted in close collaboration with industry and in the context of Software Center at Malmö University. Software Center is a collaboration between eleven software-intensive companies and five Swedish universities with the mission to accelerate the adoption of novel approaches to software engineering. Software Center was established in 2011 and is hosted at Chalmers University of Technology and Gothenburg University. Malmö University is a member of Software Center since 2013. The research is in the field of software engineering with a focus on large-scale software development and conducted in close collaboration with Ericsson, Volvo Cars, AB Volvo, Saab Defense, Jeppesen, Axis Communications, Tetra Pak, Grundfos, Siemens, Bosch and Qamcom. (http://www.software-center.se). The Software Center research group conducts research in a number of themes including software architecture, continuous delivery, customer data and ecosystems and software metrics. In addition, we study organizational aspects of software engineering including the transition towards self-management, empowerment and autonomous teams.

Research focus
The research project focuses on the adoption and advancement of data driven development practices and how large-scale software development companies increasingly use data to improve products and learn about customers and partners in their business ecosystem. As this is associated with both technical and organizational challenges, this project identifies these challenges and help address these by developing methods and tool support. In particular, the project studies how data driven development practices can help companies increase the accuracy of their R&D investments and how experimentation techniques and real-time collection of customer data allow for continuous validation of software functionality. To allow for knowledge transfer and development of solutions that are applicable across domains, the research is conducted in close collaboration with embedded systems companies as well as with online companies.

As a PhD student, you will develop methods and tools that enable the transition towards a data driven culture in software-intensive companies across domains. This includes:

• architectures and platforms that allow for continuous collection and use of data,

• techniques that enable data driven decision-making and prioritization of software functionality,

• an ecosystem driven data integration approach that allows an organization to assess and maximize the benefits of the external partners in their business ecosystem.

The problem space is broad and covers business, process, and organizational aspects of software development and deployment. The specific focus of the project will be agreed upon between the doctoral student, the industry partners and the supervisor.

Eligibility requirements for admission
Ph.D. students are both employed and admitted to the study programme in parallel. To be eligible for PhD studies, a student must have:

1) a second-cycle higher education degree.

2) completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are second-cycle.

3) in some other way, nationally or internationally, acquired equivalent knowledge.

Regulations regarding admission to PhD studies can be found in Higher Education Ordinance 7 Chap. 34-41 §§.

Special admission requirements
Special eligibility is accorded to those who have knowledge and skills equivalent to a second-cycle degree in computer science or in another subject that has relevance for computer science

Good knowledge of written and spoken English is a prerequisite.

Assessment and selection criteria
Initial assessment concerns the general and specific eligibility requirements (above).

Further, according to Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 5 §, importance is placed on the student's ability to appropriate the advanced learning of the third-cycle PhD programme. The previously written material and the dissertation plan are important indicators of this ability as well as research experience and documented relevant working life experience. Of special relevance are independently written material on advanced level (MSc).

Good knowledge (on the level of second-cycle higher education degree) of computer science or related area

Additional assessment criteria include demonstrated analytical and communication skills, and demonstrated fluency in written and spoken English.

The Faculty of Technology and Society
