The department Intellectual Properties (IP) is a global support function within Group Legal that provides IP support to all companies and business units within the Volvo Car Group. Currently we are 11 IP professionals, working in a digital environment, in a modern, activity based workspace. The department consists of Patent Attorneys, Trademark, Design and IP Counsels as well as IP administrators. The group is responsible for all aspects connected to intellectual property in general, such as patents, trademarks, design, copyright, trade secrets etc, to intellectual property agreements, such as assignment and license agreements, and to intellectual property in any other context such as R&D agreements, purchase agreements as well as other commercial agreements. IP's objectives are to develop strategies for and implementation of an IP portfolio that support Volvo Car Groups overall business objectives and to provide support and advice that adds value and protects the interest of the company and to ensure that such strategies are implemented, through establishment and maintenance of the Volvo Car Groups IP portfolio. The department also handles all conflicts relating to IP within Volvo Car Group. Besides providing IP advice in specific matters. IP offers training and is engaged in developing polices, instructions and guidelines which minimizes legal risks within the IP area.
The Patent attorney will be responsible for an assigned IP portfolio relating to patents and technology and will be responsible for the communication with stakeholders within the organisation, as well as external parties such as outside counsel and governmental entities. The Patent Attorney will assure that the assigned patent portfolio is managed in accordance with set strategies, and take needed decisions. To start with, the Patent Attorney will handle an assigned portfolio within the electronics, HMI and hybrid field, due to a parental leave, after that period, a permanent portfolio in a similar field will be assigned.
Main responsibilities
• Provide the Volvo Car organisation with support and advice within the patent area, involving clearance searches, research and advice in invention and patent matters
• Manage database searches, invention analysis, support patent application drafting, document and contract drafting, negotiation with external parties, and portfolio management
• Supervise external advisors providing support in matters requiring external specialist support
• Provide internal patent and IP training to the organization
• Engage in development of tools and templates and communication material
Required qualifications
• Master of engineering in field of electronics, telematics, software or physics
• 3-5 years of experience in the patent profession at an industry or in private practice (holding an associate or regular patent attorney position)
• Fluent in English
• Basic understanding of business, business strategies and goals along with a basic financial understanding and awareness, and how they affect IP is meritorious
• Analytical skills and experienced in making decision, developing solutions or judgments within patent area is meritorious
• Interest in and ability to find areas of improvements and drive change within the patent area is meritorious
• Additional language skills, such as basic Swedish, German, French or Mandarin will be an asset
