Husqvarna's Legal Affairs Unit consists of four parts: Law, Risk Management, Intellectual Property (IP) and Environment. The unit provides the Husqvarna Group with support in these areas and includes approximately thirty people worldwide. Our mission is to provide management and business units with necessary service and support in our respective areas of responsibility. The IP Department consists today of 13 persons in Germany, Japan and Sweden.
We are now seeking an Operation Patent Attorney to join our IP group located in Huskvarna, Sweden. The position is to provide cover for a period of 12 months with the possibility of being prolonged.
Operation is the activity in which innovations which have been decided to need IP protection is carried-out, i.e. drafting and prosecuting IP rights such as patents, utility models and design. The Operation Patent Attorney proactively supports the Product Categories to protect and secure investments in intellectual assets of the Husqvarna group with the purpose of adding tangible value to the business.
Key assignments will include:
• Drafting and prosecuting patent applications;
• Drafting and prosecuting oppositions;
• Drafting and prosecuting appeals in the examination as well as in the opposition phase;
• Preparing and attending interviews called for by an IP Authority;
• Preparing and attending Oral Proceedings called for by an IP Authority;
• Performing freedom-to-operate analyses;
• Providing support and technical expertise in connection with litigations;
• Providing support and technical expertise in connection with licensing;
• Being a proactive and trusted patent/IP advisor;
• Actively managing the outsource provider, including,
• drafting of applications,
• interviews with IP authorities,
• oppositions and validity of IP rights
• measuring the performance of the outsource provider through agreed Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as quality, price, delivery lead-time etc.
• performing supplier review meetings including eg. KPI review and listing them according to a severity scheme (green, amber, red) with follow-up actions.
Skills and Expertise needed
In order to fulfill your assignments
• You have successfully managed development or similar projects;
• You have very good understanding of the quality of a patent (claims, description and drawings);
• You have a very good understanding for the patent system and the difference between the major national and regional systems;
• You have an interest in and understanding of business strategies and competence in implementing the Group's business strategies at work. We see it as an asset if you have prior experience of and interest in our products;
• You can make things happen and, you are proactive and you are willing to take your own initiatives;
• - You are an open person with the interest and ability to communicate with others, since your work will require close contact with colleagues across the Group's various
subsidiaries worldwide as well as authorities;
• You must be able to communicate fluently in spoken and written English. Additional language skills are a plus;
• You have a good understanding of competitors' IP in the innovation focus areas.
Qualifications and professional experience
• Master of Science Degree, ideally in Electronics, Physics or Mechanics;
• Approximately 5 years patent experience from industry or private practice;
• It is an advantage if you have international experience;
• Experience from R&D work is an advantage.
