Call for applications for One doctoral studentship in Sociology, in the research project "Politics by Other Means: Policy Professionals in Comparative Perspective"

Description

The successful applicant will work within the framework of the project "Politics by Other Means: Policy Professionals in Comparative Perspective" (led by professor Stefan Svallfors, see more information here: http://www.sh.se/p3/ext/res.nsf/vRes/om_sodertorn_1309250619739_politics_by_other_means_for_applicants_pdf/$File/Politics%20by%20Other%20Means%20for%20applicants.pdf

The project analyses the work and life-worlds of policy professionals - people who are employed to affect politics and policy, rather than elected to office. They are increasingly found as political and policy advisors in government agencies and political parties, in interest organisations, think tanks, PR bureaus and in private firms. They include groups such as political advisors, political secretaries, trade union and business association experts, lobbyists, and think-tank intellectuals.

This notification of a vacancy includes both admission to third-cycle education, i.e. research level, and employment on a doctoral studentship.The intended outcome for students admitted to third-cycle education is a PhD.The programme covers 240 credits, which is the equivalent of four years of full-time study.A doctoral student's working hours should primarily be dedicated to his/her third-cycle studies;however, the position may entail other duties within education, research and/or administration, but these may be equivalent to no more than 20% of full-time.

The PhD student will be part of the PhD training program PESO (Politics, Economy and Society's Organization) at the School of Social Sciences, Södertörn University. PESO includes four disciplines: Sociology, Political Science, Economics, and Business Administration.

Entry requirements and selection criteria
The general entry requirements are:

1. a second-cycle qualification,

2. fulfilment of the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or

3. the acquisition of substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.Only persons who are being admitted or who have already been admitted to third-cycle courses and programmes may be employed on a doctoral studentship.

Specific entry requirements

The specific entry requirements are fulfilled by a student who has knowledge equivalent to 90 credits in Sociology or other relevant social science discipline, or who has acquired the equivalent knowledge abroad or through previous studies.In exceptional circumstances, the Faculty Board may permit an exemption from the specific entry requirements for an individual applicant.

The applicants will be ranked in accordance with (a) the quality of their Master's thesis and other submitted publications, (b) how well their proposed research fits with the project, (c) previous experience with similar analyses as the ones in the project.
