The Accelerator Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Vacuum System Mechanical Technician.

Description of division

The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, installation, commissioning and operation of the ESS accelerator complex, in collaboration with partner institutions and other divisions of the ESS. The vacuum team in the Specialised Technical Services Group is responsible for all technical vacuum systems at ESS including accelerator, target and neutron instruments.

Description of main responsibilities

• Assemble, test, certify and document the mechanical interfaces of the vacuum system
• Assist in the vacuum and mechanical planning, installation, assembly, commissioning and operation of vacuum system for Accelerator, Target and Neutron Science Divisions
• Set-up, operate, calibrate and maintain process and test equipment and apparatus for the vacuum system
• Assist in the maintenance of documentation records for assembly, repair, testing and qualification of the vacuum equipment and chambers and other related systems and their components
• Develop procedures and documentation related to the design, fabrication, testing, and repair of vacuum system and other related systems and their components
• Maintain test and measurement data, travelers and any other documentation records related to the fabrication, testing and repair of vacuum equipment and other related systems and their components
• Use electronic and mechanical test and measurement equipment to verify vacuum system and component performance and mechanical integrity
• Use computers to collect, record, and analyse data for acceptance, operation and maintenance of vacuum and other related systems and their components
• Consolidate and record traveler data in a computer database
• Ensure compliance with ESH and quality procedures and programs
• Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of laboratory values and ethics

In the normal operation phase, scheduled on-call service but no permanent physical presence at site is foreseen during off-business hours.

Qualifications

• Associate's degree in mechanical construction or mechanical design or related technical field with at least 5 years of hands-on experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• While mechanics aptitude is essential a working knowledge of mechanical instrumentation, vacuum and computers are necessary
• Experience in working with vacuum systems, vacuum components and instrumentation and associated test equipment e.g. leak detectors, RGA's etc. preferably in an ultra-high vacuum environment
• Experience in the use of mechanical and electronic test and measurement equipment for vacuum is required
• Experience in the use of CAD programs is an advantage
• Experience in the construction, assembly, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, testing and related vacuum systems and components e.g. cryogenic, electrical power, instrumentation etc. required, with experience in accelerator operations is an advantage
• Must have good English written and oral communications skills

To be successful and perform well in this position, it is important to be self-motivated, have good judgement and like hands-on work. The candidate must have good communication skills in written and oral English. To be able to interact well with others are important, as well as a service-minded attitude in the work performed.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
