Thesis Proposal M.Sc

How is the threat landscape for attacks in automotive evolving with the introduction of self-driving vehicles?

Background

With the introduction of self-driving vehicles and more ways to remotely control and configure vehicles, we must consider how this will affect the threat landscape for the automotive industry.

Problem
The removal of the driver in self-driving vehicles means that there will be no driver to stop the threat agents to physically accessing the vehicle. It also means there will be no driver to notice if normal vehicle functionalities stop working or malfunction e.g., vehicle takes a different route or stops.
More ways to remotely control and configure the vehicles means that there will be new and more attack vectors to consider.

Goal of the thesis
Investigate if our TARA (Threat Analysis Risk Assessment) method needs to be updated to properly analyze self-driving vehicles, by analyzing assumptions and mitigations involving the driver in previously made TARAs.
Investigate if there are new threat agents and/or their motivations has changed.
Investigate to what extent can a TARA made on a non-autonomous vehicle be reused in an autonomous vehicle context when part of the platform is carried over.
Based on findings in bullet 1-3 propose how to update the TARA methodology to support self-driving vehicle use cases.
Investigate the need, effectiveness, and possibility of new mitigations to replicate a driver (e.g., anomaly detection based on vehicle driving behavior, GPS, vehicle functionality etc.).
Investigate if there is a need to have better physical protection due to the removal of the driver (HSMs, onboard intrusion detection systems, cameras etc.).
Investigate what kind of new attack vectors and threats that are introduced with the introduction of RADAR and LIDAR for self-driving vehicle purposes.
Investigate if the introduction of RADAR and LIDAR for self-driving vehicle purposes, can be used in different mitigations.

Note that the scope of the goals of the thesis are too big for a single thesis. The students will together with the tutors decide on an appropriate scope based on interest and size.

Background of students

Candidates should be in the final year of their master's studies. Suitable masters' programmes include Software Engineering, Computer Science, IT. Candidates with equivalent background from other programmes will also be considered.

This work focuses on concept and design phases of the system development lifecycle. Several subject areas such as computer and network/IT security, cryptography, software engineering, software verification and testing, embedded and real-time systems are relevant in the context of this thesis work. Knowledge in one or several of these areas will be considered favourably. As the work environment is highly international, good skills in English, both oral and written, are required.
