The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Technician within the Manufacturing Section.

Description of main responsibilities

The Manufacturing Section has a mandate to provide centralized time-critical support for a broad range of mechanical disciplines of manufacturing to all divisions, groups, sections, work packages and users at ESS. The primary focus during the next 3-5 years is to support the installation and staged commissioning phases of the facility. Later, as the facility transitions to steady-state operation, support will begin to include R&D and prototyping activities.

The Manufacturing Section is recruiting for its second technician position. This technician will be responsible for completing machining, cutting and basic fabrication activities. These tasks will be focused on the time-critical and specialized needs of the facility, offering wide variation and interaction with most work packages including accelerator, target and scientific instruments.

This position offers a unique chance not only to be involved in the renowned ESS project, but also to assist in establishing brand new modern mechanical workshops. There will be opportunities for using CNC equipment and 3D printing, and to learn about the vast specialized technical areas present within the facility. This technician will become a vital part of a highly competent and flexible team supporting the current and future manufacturing needs of ESS.

Qualifications:

• Minimum 10 years practical hands-on machine tool experience
• Minimum 5 years CNC machining experience
• Relevant formal qualification
• Broad knowledge of manufacturing techniques/processes
• Excellent oral and written communication skills (Swedish and English)

Desired additional competencies of the successful applicant:

• Experience in use of CAD software
• Basic welding experience in MIG and TIG processes
• Basic experience with fabrication and sheet metal working
• 3D printing experience
• Previous experience working with scientific and/or R&D projects

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
