We are looking for a Manager Patents France and the US to join our highly skilled team at Volvo Group Intellectual Property in Gothenburg, Sweden, or Lyon, France.

Volvo Group Intellectual Property (VGIP) is responsible for intellectual property for the entire Volvo Group and consists of three departments: Patents; IP Strategy & Portfolio; and IP Legal, Trademarks & Designs. The VGIP organization is global with locations in France, Japan, Korea, Sweden and the US.

The Volvo Group is refocusing its IP operations and continues to strengthen its global IP organization. This has created a unique opportunity for an experienced Manager and Patent Attorney.

In the position as Manager Patents France and the US you will have a dual role to:

• manage the patent teams in France and the US and coordinate Patent Attorney support for Volvo Group R&D facilities in France and the Americas, and
• work as a qualified Patent Attorney to support R&D projects, inventors and other stakeholders located mainly in Sweden

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

As Manager Patents France and the US your main tasks and responsibilities will be to:
• lead and manage the patent teams in France and the US and drive professional development of the employees of these teams
• coordinate Patent Attorney support for Volvo Group R&D facilities in France and the Americas
• support and contribute to the Volvo Group patent creation process by drafting and prosecuting patent applications and defending Volvo Group patents challenged by third parties
• drive patent training and invention harvesting workshops
• handle and manage patent-related matters, such as invention disclosures, patent applications, opposition and appeal proceedings, and support in patent license and use issues
• provide patent-related opinions such as patentability, validity, freedom to operate and infringement opinions
• evaluate and challenge third party patent rights
• support the IP Strategy & Portfolio team in IP strategy development, IP portfolio creation and use, based on the Volvo Group IP Plan and the implementation thereof

Minimum Education and Experience

• Technical degree (M.Sc. or higher)
• Qualified Patent Attorney of a major jurisdiction, e.g. EP or the US
• Strong leadership abilities, preferably with 5 years of experience of people management
• Expert knowledge of patent law and practice of major jurisdictions
• Strong IP expertise and comprehensive Patent Attorney capabilities, including expert knowledge and experience of obtaining and defending proprietary patent rights and challenging third party patent rights
• Good business knowledge and understanding

Critical Competencies and Skills
You need to have a strong personal credibility and a can-do mindset with high drive and energy and be capable of performing multiple duties effectively in a fast paced environment. The position requires the ability to develop direct reports and build effective teams. In addition, cultural awareness and appreciation, strong business acumen, customer focus and entrepreneurial drive are important requirements.

Good English communication skills, both oral and written are essential. A good understanding of the automotive businesses and processes is a merit but not a requirement.
