The Accelerator Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an LLRF Engineer.

Description of Accelerator Division?

The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of the ESS accelerator. The pulsed superconducting linac, to be built in Lund, will produce a 5 MW average power proton beam, driving the world 's most powerful neutron source.

Description of RF Section

The RF Section is responsible for generating, distributing and regulating 125 MW of pulsed RF power to 155 accelerating RF cavities of different types.

Description of the LLRF system

The low-level RF (LLRF) system regulates the amplitude and phase of the fields of the accelerating cavities. It compensates for drifts in the resonance frequency of each cavity using stepper motor and piezo actuators and provides signals and functionality to the interlock system. The fast feedback algorithms (in baseband) are implemented in an FPGA and slower control functionality is implemented in an embedded computer, which is interfaced to the integrated control system.

Qualifications and main responsibilities

Your main responsibility will be to continue with the design of LLRF and associated systems. As a LLRF Engineer you will review and consolidate the LLRF design and ensure that it can be implemented and meets the accelerator's requirements with the help of our partner labs. Additionally you will be supporting on general RF tasks within the section as required.

Your main areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

• Have an active role in the ongoing design, installation and commissioning of LLRF systems at ESS;
• Involvement in control algorithms and FPGA hardware and software developments;
• Improve and further develop algorithms to improve the stability of the accelerating fields in the cavities;
• Help define and develop additional algorithms, scripts and procedures for further testing, diagnostics and cavity conditioning;
• Develop test and commissioning procedures of the LLRF systems before and after installation into the machine;
• Support LLRF developments and operation in the test stands and test systems in Lund and at Partner Labs;
• Continue to optimize and improve LLRF systems during design, installation and operations;
• Supporting on general RF tasks within the section as required;
• Provide support and training internally and for ESS partners.

To be successful in this position, you have a relevant degree in electrical engineering, electronic engineering or physics. To fulfill this role, you will have relevant experience from academia or engineering positions with similar job functions.

• Familiarity with ATCA/microTCA or similar platforms;
• Control of Stepper motor and piezo actuators;
• Board design and fault finding;
• EPICS, C/C++, Python, FPGA programming;
• Projects with external collaborations and working with external client's requirements.;
