Studies in red wood ants (Formica sp.) and sustainable forest management
Description:
The modern forestry system in Sweden, with conifer plantations followed by clearcuts, have a high impact on many ecosystems and the services they provide. Some of these forest 's most plentyful but smallest inhabitants, are the red wood ants (RWA), also known as the Formica rufa-group, which are specialized to form large populations under the canopies of conifers. In this project we will investigate how vulnerable RWA and associated species are for different forest management systems, and methods for reducing the effect by using other forest management systems or targeted forest conservation measures in clearcuts. Study areas will be both managed conifer forests and new plantations with fast growing broadleaves, with possible connection to the competence center Trees For Me.

The PhD student will be included in the silviculture and forest conservation research teams. Our research group lift a heavy part of the teaching on both bachelor and master level but we also do substantial dissemination of our research to forest stakeholders, governmental institutions, NGO 's and society. On average as a doctoral student you will teach 1-3 weeks per year and participate in extension activities such as excursions and seminars 1-2 times per year.
