Comparative Medicine has the operational responsibility for the infrastructure supporting all aspects of use and care of laboratory animals.

We provide Laboratory Animal Science education and training (LAS E&T) as well as continuous professional development (CPD). We endeavor to incorporate the 3R principle (Reduce, Refine, Replace) in every aspect of Karolinska Institutet's research using experimental animals. Comparative Medicine is responsible for the future development of this infrastructure and have for example developed a concept for next generation of animal facilities (concept facilities). The first facilities based on this concept opened in 2013 and a new, state of the art facility will open in 2018. We also act as a link between Karolinska Institutet and other national and international authorities that regulate how experimental animals should be cared for and used in research.

Work Description
The successful applicant will serve as a designated facility veterinarian and be part of the veterinarian college of Comparative Medicine. You are expected to fulfill the role of a designated facility veterinarian according to the Swedish regulations and EU law, and to assist laboratory animal facilities in all areas covering animal ethics, animal welfare, and the care and use of laboratory animals. In case you have an active research portfolio, time to conduct research is negotiable. The position can be setup as a part-time employment or a full time position. The operational standards at Comparative Medicine are governed by KIs common values, the 3R’s and evidence based practice.

Qualifications
You should have merits in work related to the care use of laboratory animals, a degree in veterinarian medicine valid in Sweden (EU) and a PhD relating to work with laboratory animals. Experience from caring for aquatic species such as zebra fish, and/or experience from large mammalian species (e.g. pig, rabbit, sheep), is meritorious for the position. An active research portfolio is also considered meritorious.

You are a flexible person eager to develop your skills, you like to disseminate knowledge and has a cooperative attitude towards problem solving. As designated veterinarian you are active in the facility management team. You must be able to communicate freely in English. Legal and administrative tasks are conducted predominantly in the Swedish language.
