The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is among the largest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology of different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total some 250 staff. The KI Biobank is a core facility hosted by MEB and its purpose is to provide professional sample and data services for world-class medical research that improves healthcare and public health.

The facility typically serves defined research studies that collect and use samples or manage sample-related data. After eleven years of steady growth the biobank now holds samples and related data from half a million Swedish residents. It is vital that our work is done to high ethical standards and an important duty is maintaining full compliance with relevant laws. To manage this operation effectively we are updating our IT systems to a very advanced level. We now need to ensure that it is sustainable, highly effective and can be further developed to meet evolving needs and opportunities.

The purpose of this role as Java-developer is to support the maintenance and development of the IT systems that support the internal laboratory operations of the KI biobank. This includes the databases, laboratory information management system (LIMS), enterprise service bus (ESB) and equipment control systems.

What makes this position somewhat out of the ordinary is that KI is the first organization globally to implement LabVantage LIMS Version 8.1. KI is also the first biobank globally to automate all laboratory IT communication services. In addition to this KI is the first biobank to implement the MuleSoft enterprise service bus (ESB). Extensive training of the LIMS and ESB will be offered by a leading CapGemini LabVantage and MuleSoft expert. As a Java-developer you will be a part of this exciting journey.

The role-holder will:

gain a thorough understanding of the laboratory systems, processes and automation ensure good maintenance and support of the laboratory IT systems together with biobank leadership, develop an IT strategy that serves the longer term needs of the biobank business units and its external clients program and trouble-shoot laboratory automation

Experience and knowledge that is required:

three years of experience creating Java-driven Web Applications adept in Java, J2EE architecture, Javascript, JSP, DHTML/Web Page development including client-side scripting to add major functionality existing and future framework webservices implementation, e.g SOAP, JBoss, Ajax, JQuery, JSON XML scripting languages, Maven experience; SOPA UI Tool, Intellij Idea or Eclipse, XSLT and XSD strong relational database knowledge and experience using either Oracle and/or SQL Server agile system development (for example Scrum) good language skills in Swedish and English, spoken and written

Personal characteristics:

• very effective team working, communication and interpersonal skills

• must be able to intelligently present and defend ideas to peers

• self-motivated and able to direct own work and decisions

• good problem solving skills

• performance-orientated

• stable and able to cope with changing demands, work-load and occasional stress

Educational background of minimum a BSc degree in computer science or similar is required.
