The Administration Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Junior Legal Officer position.

Description of division
The European Spallation Source AB is a Swedish limited liability company jointly owned by the Swedish and Danish Governments. The core business of the company is to design, plan, construct, commission, operate and decommission the European Spallation Source (ESS), a large-scale research facility for materials research. ESS aims to be one of the brightest source of neutrons in the world for scientific research and will become a multi-scientific facility for advanced research and industrial development. More than 300 researchers from 11 countries have, so far, taken part in the planning.

The Legal division manages and develops the provision of legal services to ESS AB on all aspects of ESS AB’s remit and related matters to enable it to meet its objectives and act within the law. The provision of quality legal advice ensures the legality of ESS AB’s decisions and is of vital importance in preventing or reducing the risk of liability and subsequent litigation.  

Description of main responsibilities
As a Junior Legal Officer you will be part of a growing Legal team and report to the Head of Legal.

You will carry out independent work and also support other Legal Officers and other company departments in a variety of legal issues, including IPR related issues, supply and outsourcing agreements, consultancy and secondment agreements, and general commercial. The position provides for significant cross-functional interaction with departments within the company as well as with the scientific and technical departments.

You will enjoy a varied and challenging workload which may include:

• Assist in reviewing, drafting and negotiating legal documents, such as collaboration agreements, MoUs, license agremeents, purchase of services and supply agreements, consultancy agreements, sponsorship, studentship and commercial agreements.

• Supporting Legal Officers in identifying gaps and providing legal support to the Legal Division on a range of matters.

• Conduct legal research in various areas, including EU law, supporting Legal Officers and the Head of Legal.

• Ensure compliance with applicable laws.

Qualifications
• Degree in Law with demonstrated record of accomplishments and achievements

• Ideally 1-2 years of practical legal experience (e.g. law firm with client contact and/or prior in-house experience)

• Knowledge and/or previous experience in working with other areas of law is an advantage (e.g. labour law and/or energy and/or IPR).    

• Good contract drafting, reviewing and eye for detail.

• Strong research, administrative, writing, analytical and reporting skills

At this stage the position is a 12-month time limited contract. There may be a possibility for extension after that period, depending on performance and the Organisation's need. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
