The Accelerator Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an Ion Source Scientist/Engineer position.

Description of the division and closest team

The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, installation and commissioning of the ESS accelerator, in collaboration with partner institutions and other divisions of the ESS.

Description of main duties and responsibilities

• Tests and commissioning of the Ion Source and LEBT;
• Perform a variety of R&D activities on the Ion Source and LEBT (including a second ion source) with the objective of improving the lifetime and the reliability of those systems;
• Perform analysis of experimental results using scientific techniques and standard computer software;
• Documentation of research results in both written reports and scientific publications;
• Development and testing of new laboratory and instrument control software;
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair laboratory equipment as necessary;
• Ensure proper operation of the ISRC and LEBT and their associated subsystems;
• Initiate, support and perform troubleshooting and repairs to restore proper operation of the Ion Source and LEBT after a downtime;
• Define, plan, support and perform scheduled maintenance tasks on the Ion Source and LEBT;
• Set up and operate the Ion Source Test Stand;
• Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements;

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

• PhD in Physics or other relevant technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
• Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience in the field of Ion Sources and Accelerators;
• Experience with charged particle optics simulation software together with knowledge in data processing and software programming is mandatory;
• Demonstrated experience and knowledge of safety as it pertains to pulsed-power and electrical systems and devices;
• Hands-on experience in designing, assembling, troubleshooting and operating Ion Sources and associated systems and subsystems;
• Experience with electronics control and data acquisition systems, beam instrumentation, high voltage systems, vacuum systems, water-cooling systems;
• A flexibility to occasionally work outside of normal working hours and take on on-call duties;
• Good knowledge of spoken and written English;
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.


Preferred qualifications:

• Knowledge of scientific systems, calculations, applications, and research including excellent analytical and data analysis skills;
• Experience in maintaining system and process documentation;
• Experience in operating and designing plasma diagnostic equipment;

To be successful and perform well in this position the candidate must be a quick learner, take initiative and confidently work under own direction. You must be able to plan activities and projects well in advance, prioritise your tasks and have a problem-solving attitude.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
