The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an Infrastructure Technology Engineer, in the Control System Infrastructure Group, within the Integrated Controls Systems division.

Description of directorate/division
You will join the Integrated Control System division, which is designing, constructing, commissioning and operating the control systems for the ESS facility. The Control system can be described as the "Central nervous system" of the ESS facility that monitors and controls most of the operational aspects. We cover a wide range of sensing, control and automation technology from highly customized electronics specific for ESS applications to advanced software systems.

The Control System Infrastructure group designs, develops, commissions and operates the control system infrastructure. The scope of the group ranges from network and computing infrastructure to deployment of software and networking services and includes some specialized infrastructural items such as the global ESS timing system and the ESS control room.

The controls system infrastructure scope contains of a mixture from entirely in-house developed solutions to procurement, construction, configuration and operation of industry standard systems for network, computing and industrial control.

Description of main responsibilities

• Contribute to the design, of the control system infrastructure, establish network specifications by conferring with others.
• Maintain high level network performance by monitoring, analyzing and carrying out performance tuning and troubleshooting network issues.
• Establish redundancy requirements for the control system networks, firewalls and other control system infrastructure.
• Participate in securing the control system networks by developing network access, monitoring, control and evaluation.
• Lead and coordinate the network installation works with suppliers and stakeholders.
• Actively participate in the Experimental Physics & Industrial Control System (EPICS) integration process.
• Advise and support other members of the ESS project in network related tasks.
• Act as an interface between the Integrated Control System division and other divisions at ESS.
• Ability to teach, mentor, communicate to the point, and defend technical concepts and solutions.

Qualifications

• Master or Bachelor degree in electrical engineering, Computer Science or similar discipline, or equivalent work experience.

Technical competencies:

• At least 5 years of experience in design, implementation and operation of complex enterprise networks.
• Knowledge of network passive and active components is required.
• Advanced knowledge of TCP/IP protocols, routing (OSPF, BGP), network access and authentication (802.1X, Radius and TACACS).
• Knowledge and experience in administration of DNS, DHCP, proxies, firewalls, Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems and Layer 4 and 7 load balancers.
• Experience in administrating Juniper network equipment.
• Experience in administrating a next generation firewall.
• Knowledge of network cabling, connectors, standards and grounding would be advantageous.

The following experiences are considered as beneficial but not required:

• Working within scientific/academic environments.
• Previous experience from a construction project.

Behavioral competencies:
The ideal candidate will have the ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment and work effectively in a small team to promote team spirit. Communicate effectively in English, and knowledge of other European languages would be advantageous.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
