The Active Safety department has been one of the fastest growing parts of Volvo Car Group over the last decade due to rapid development of Active Safety systems and functionality. By continuously launching innovative and world first Active Safety features, Volvo Cars has positioned itself among the leaders in the automotive industry. Now, the work towards achieving our vision that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo, continues with autonomous driving as the next step forward.

What you 'll do

Volvo Cars is now opening up two industrial PhD student research positions for Validation of Unsupervised Self-Driving Vehicles. These cars, which drive themselves, will truly transform vehicle industry and society. These highly autonomous vehicles utilize advanced computations, large sensor sets like multiple radars and lidars, 360 computer vision and more to accurately position themselves and navigate in traffic. The main objective of the research projects is to develop methods and tools to show that future self-driving systems are safe for public use without having to drive astronomical distances.

We are looking for bright achievers who wants to be a member of the team developing the next generations of Volvo cars. Your particular research will be dedicated towards one of the following areas:
A) Validation of Sensing for Unsupervised Self-Driving Cars.
B) Function Validation of Unsupervised Self-Driving Cars.

You will be tightly connected to responsible agile teams to put your new knowledge at work as soon as possible. Academically, you will join leading research groups at Chalmers University of Technology, and likely to collaborate with key partners also internationally. You will also be part of Volvo Cars Industrial PhD Program.

You and your skills

To start with background and minimum expectations, we believe you have M.Sc. degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Computer or Data Science, Mathematics Engineering or similar and you have a fluent English proficiency in written and spoken.

For project A, we expect you to have knowledge and experiences within 3D reconstruction, computer vision, deep learning, camera calibration/tracking, rendering / computer graphics and augmented reality.

For project B, we expect you to have knowledge and experiences within Machine/deep learning, scenario reconstruction, safety validation, statistics and modelling.

For both project it is beneficial if you have knowledge in statistical signal processing, sensor fusion, large-scale computations, parameter estimation, active safety, environment perception and vehicle dynamics.

Having programming skills and knowledge in C/C++, Python, Matlab it is a strong merit for both roles, as well as having a driver 's license "B". valid in Sweden.
