At Sandvik Machining Solutions (SMS), we have a patent portfolio currently holding more than 3000 registered patents - protecting solutions relating to cutting tools and materials as well as digitalization of the product offer. These, as well as other Intellectual Property (IP) rights are vital and high-priority elements of our business operations - and we're now looking for a Head of Patents to continue the work to lead the safeguarding of our technological advancements further.
More about us
SMS, a business area segment within the Sandvik Group - incorporating the five divisions of Sandvik Coromant, Seco Tools, Walter, Dormer Pramet and Wolfram - is the leading supplier in the global cutting tool industry and our brand portfolio holds some of the strongest brands in the market. Lots of exciting things are happening right now - we have a strong M&A agenda and are going through a major digital transformation. We welcome you to join us in a versatile role with excellent opportunities for personal development, right in the center of our multinational business!
Your mission
As the Head of Patents, you're a crucial driving force behind our intellectual property strategy, as you with your skilled specialist function in collaboration with the Business Area General Counsel and the Division lead all work with IP matters within our business area segment. This includes shaping, managing and enforcing our Technology IP portfolio in alignment with business priorities, and managing risks associated with third-party Technology IP, as well as securing compliance with relevant policies.
Your mission also includes:
Overseeing financial aspects, including planning, reporting, and resource allocation.
Ensuring proper attention to IP matters in decision-making forums, such as management teams and Patent Boards.
Driving the extraction of value from our IP through enforcement and licensing initiatives.
Opening new avenues for revenue generation and partnerships through internal collaboration.
Driving process enhancements and streamlining the IP protection and enforcement.
Ensuring that IP considerations are seamlessly integrated into our business strategy.

You lead a dynamic team of patent managers, patent engineers, patent attorneys, and patent administrators. Your leadership extends to the development of your team's competencies, empowering them to excel in their roles and aligning their skills with evolving business needs. As a leader, you'll also contribute to recruitment efforts, assembling a team that embodies excellence and innovation.
Location and travel
This role is ideally based either in Västberga, Stockholm or Sandviken and includes occasional travel abroad.
Your character
We're looking for a Patent Attorney and/or someone with a Law degree and extensive experience of managing patents in a global environment. You have a strong understanding of patent law and regulations, both national and international, and proficiency in financial planning and reporting related to intellectual property, as well as a passion for technology. Your background also includes managing and developing diverse teams. As we act both locally and in a global setting, you need excellent communication skills in English, verbally and in writing, while Swedish is a plus.
It's key that you can gain trust both by building long-term personal relationships and offering advice and guidance based on legal experience, sound judgment and a thorough business understanding. We therefore place great value on your personal qualities, characterized by your structured, analytical and decisive mindset. You're also a true team player and a natural leader, with a strong drive to get things done.
Our culture
Our role is clear - through every action, every day, we make the shift and advance the world through engineering. We believe in an inclusive, equal and open-minded culture, and we nurture our diversities to form a solid foundation for achieving great results. Add fair and rewarding benefits, as well as many different career options. Are you intrigued? Visit our website, LinkedIn or Facebook page to get to know us further.
