Assistant professor in Space Science with special emphasis on experimental cloud microphysics.
The Satellite Atmospheric Science group is part of the Institute of Space Science (IRV) at Kiruna Space Campus. The institute belongs to Lulea University of Technology, but collaborates also closely with the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF). Both institutions have not only a focus on space, but also a focus on environmental science, in particular atmospheric science. The Satellite Atmospheric Science group wants to start a new research group on in-situ measurements of cloud ice microphysics. The goal is to develop and use cloud particle imaging instruments to study the size and shape distributions of cloud ice particles. The focus should be on experiments with balloons, aircraft, or unmanned drones. Our department has good laboratory infrastructure, which is currently used mostly for student balloon and rocket experiments (BEXUS and REXUS). Although the primary goal of the new research area is scientific, we hope that it will also inspire student experiments and campaigns around cloud microphysics.
We are looking for a scientist with experience with cloud particle imagers or replicators to lead the development of the new group. Duties are 80% research and 20% teaching.
Qualification requirements
Those candidates are qualified for appointment as assistant professor who have taken a doctoral degree or possess a foreign degree that is judged equivalent to a doctoral degree. Consideration shall be primarily given to applicants who have taken their degree no more than five years prior to the end of the application period. Also applicants who have taken their degree earlier can be considered if there are special circumstances. (HEO Ch 4 Sect. 10 ).
Selection criteria
The following grounds for assessment will be applied:
Scientific ability (weight 80%)
Teaching ability (weight 20%)
Other grounds for assessment, to be weighted in following order:
• Strong publication record in experimental cloud microphysics.
• Capability of independent, original, and creative research work, but at the same time be a good team player.
• Fluent in English. If you do not yet speak Swedish you should be prepared to learn Swedish within a few years.
• Female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply, since we are aiming to increase the fraction of women in the group.
• We value diversity, so candidates belonging to minorities are particularly encouraged to apply.
The application should be appended with the scientific works that the applicant in the first instance wants to use to support the scientific record( 3-6). The pedagogic merits should also be documented. The application, written in English, should be sent in the form of two separate copies.
