The Department of Shipping and Marine Technology at Chalmers University of Technology offers education and research from a wide area of competence with origin in the education of Marine Mariners and Naval Architects. We now need to strengthen our research resources with an Assistant Professor to the research group Marine Structures. We are looking for a candidate who wants to work active together with us, in the education and the research, with great inspiration and commitment to the task which offers great challenges and opportunities.
Tasks
The position is connected to the Division of Ship Design and the research group Marine Structures which works within the following areas: marine structural engineering, stability of structures, probabilistic methods and risk analysis, structure integrity analysis, fatigue, dynamic response of marine structures, material mechanics, composite mechanics and numerical methods as tools in the design and concept development of floating vessels.
The position and tasks for an Assistant Professor may be divided into three parts, teaching, research and participation in the supervision of graduate students. The teaching activities for the current position are related to courses taught by the group in the International Masters Programme in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. It may also involve some teaching activities and responsibilities in the graduate courses which are incorporated in the department?s graduate research school. Finally, you will also propose and supervise bachelor?s and master?s thesis project.
The Marine Structure research group searches for a candidate with excellent knowledge within fatigue and mathematical statistics. You should have experience from numerical methods such as the finite element method and also hydrodynamic codes and simulations. Good understanding and interest for solid mechanics, mechanics and statistical methods is a necessity for the position. You should be able to demonstrate experience from numerical analysis of marine structures. Documented knowledge and work within fatigue, mathematical statistics and probabilistic methods are considered useful qualifications.
Qualifications
To be qualified, the applicant must have a PhD-degree in solid mechanics, applied mechanics, naval architecture, mathematical statistics or similar and documented pedagogical experience in any of these fields. Apart from proven skills in research, the applicant should be capable of leading research projects as well as teaching activities. A master?s degree in Naval Architecture, work experience in shipping and (earlier) contacts with classification societies are considered useful qualifications. The candidate must be proficient in writing and speaking English since all teaching in the international master?s programme in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering is held in English.
