THE SUSTAINABILITY RELATED OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES WITH VARIOUS TRANSFORMER INSULATION FLUIDS AND BUSINESS CASE ON REREFING.

Background
Since some years we have in the electrical industry seen a trend towards more awareness of sustainability aspects and transformer oil customers asking for sustainable offerings.
Transformer oil made from high quality mineral oil has a long service life time in transformers. In today?s strive to continuously improve carbon footprints and minimize waste the fact that these oils also are recyclable poses a great opportunity to make continuous and even longer use of the products through rerefining used transformer oil.
Natural esters have at the same time by their suppliers been promoted to the market as a fire safe and more sustainable alternatives to mineral oils. Mineral oils have by them further been claimed as non-sustainable.

We would based on this want make a thorough analysis of the aspects of the two cases concerning sustainability as well as a business case for transformer oil rerefining.

This degree project will mainly be conducted at Nynas AB in Johanneshov.

Goals
The two goals of the project are:
1. To analyze aspects connected to sustainability of the relevant cases;
The up- and downstream value chains of mineral oil and natural ester based transformer fluids are to be evaluated for various sustainability related effects.
2. To map the end of life of transformers, or alternatively transformer oil, and prepare a business case on rerefining of transformer oils. E.g what happens with the oil typically today? With focus on Europe, what applies concerning volumes, locations, costs, regulations, permits, taxes, tolls, and so forth. Assess the rerefining market and mechanics, gain understanding of transformer scrapping procedures and the economics behind existing scrapping operations. Map actors, roles, mechanisms, outlets. We in particular seek the balance of business value/cost vs sustainability performance vs technical performance (see figure).

Methodology
The full scope and delimitations of the project will be defined after an initial go through with the Market Manager Electrical industry.
Fact finding over the internet, surveying relevant information from the EU Ecodesign directive related to transformers, info through GEIR and their members, interviews with stakeholders are some examples of methodology. The student is encouraged to suggest additional routes to map the area and develop knowledge.
