The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an Electromechanical Technical Engineer within the Linac Group.

Job description
The position is for a technical engineer in electronics/electromechanics to work on the installation and operation of the Normal Conducting Front End (NCFE) of the ESS proton accelerator. This part of the accelerator includes the Ion Source (ISRC), Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ), Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT) and Drift Tube Linac (DTL).

The successful candidate will join a small team within the ESS Accelerator Division and will provide skilled electromechanical and technical support to the group through activities such as assisting the installation, testing, dismantling and packing of the ESS ISRC and LEBT at the in-kind partner Lab (INFN-LNS, Catania, Italy), as well as installation, testing and commissioning of these systems in the ESS accelerator tunnel in Lund

Main duties and responsibilities
You will be responsible to install, commission, operate, and maintain electronic and electro-mechanical equipment used in the ESS NCFE.

• Plan, support or perform preparatory works (including documentation) for installation of the ISRC and LEBT in the tunnel;
• Support or perform installation of the ISRC and LEBT and their associated subsystems in the tunnel
• Check proper operation of the ISRC and LEBT. Report unusual observations and/or occurrences to supervisor.
• Plan, support or perform scheduled maintenance tasks on the ISRC and LEBT, and when needed on the NCFE;
• Support or perform emergency maintenance to restore proper operation of the ISRC and/or LEBT after downtime;
• Maintain inventory and restock required spares and equipment;
• Equip and maintain the Ion Source Test Stand
• Support or perform the preparation and execution of the ISRC and LEBT tests and commissioning;
• Support or perform the troubleshooting of ISRC and LEBT issues;
• Document performed test and their results.
• Assist in identifying root causes of failures, weaknesses, and variations in NCFE;
• Assist in developing corrective actions;
• Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements;
• Support relevant installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance activities in the NCFE in general.

Required qualifications

• Associate Degree in Engineering technologies, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
• Two years or more experience in an R&D laboratory or similar;
• Experience with electrical systems, electronics, and electromechanical systems;
• Demonstrated experience in designing, building and maintaining analogue and digital circuits including systems with microsecond response times, and high voltages;
• Ability to develop and interpret requirements and technical specifications;
• Good knowledge and experience with measurement instruments and techniques;
• Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
• Good knowledge of spoken and written English.

Other information
This position requires some physical activity, such as lifting and carrying items, etc. The selected candidate must be physically fit for the work.

It is expected that during commissioning, early operations and later in maintenance periods occasional shift work (including nights and weekends) is required. In the normal operation phase scheduled on-call service but no permanent physical presence at site is required during off-business hours.

You will be expected to be willing to enter radiologically designated areas.

Occasional travel is expected.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months' initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
