The doctoral student positions are financed mainly through education grants during the first two years and employment as doctoral students during the two last years, alternatively employment as doctoral students during four years, and pertains to a doctoral degree.

Susceptibility to chronic liver disease in obese subjects

Description of the research project
Obesity is an increasing burden for Western Countries and an independent risk factor for chronic liver disease. Environmental and genetic factors contribute to the susceptibility to chronic liver disease in obese individuals even though the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment to achieve a stable weight loss and prevent morbidities associated with obesity. Pilot studies show a beneficial effect on transaminase levels (index of hepatic damage) after bariatric surgery, but the long-term effect in preventing chronic liver disease remains unclear. Overall aim of the PhD project will be to glean insight into the natural history of chronic liver disease, the genetic background underlying liver disease onset and the effect of bariatric surgery on this condition in obese subjects, trying to find feasible and non-invasive predictors of liver disease development in obese individuals.
The selected candidate will be working at the Sahlgrenska center for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research (CMR). The project will include analyses of clinical, epidemiological and genetic data from a large database, and DNA polymorphism detection. This project will potentially result in development of tools for chronic liver disease prediction and prevention in obese individuals.
Ideally the applicants hold a medical degree, and specialist training in Gastroenterology/Hepatology is desired, but not a prerequisite. Basic knowledge of human genetics and statistics is an advantage.
