Economics
The economics discipline has a lively research and teaching environment. The department's research is mainly empirical, with applications to international economics and trade, environmental economics and sustainability, development and globalization, industrial organization and competition, finance and growth. Teaching ranges from introductory to advanced-level economics. The PhD Programme
The PhD programme covers 240 credits, which is the equivalent of four years of full-time studies. The PhD programme in economics at Södertörn University is organized jointly with SWEGPEC consisting of seven Swedish universities (Örebro University, Linköping University, Linnaeus University, Karlstad University, Södertörn University, Jönköping University, Dalarna University). Hence, the location of the specific courses will vary.
Entry requirements and selection
The general entry requirements are one of the following:
1. a second-cycle/master level qualification,
2. fulfilment of the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits awarded at second-cycle/master level, or
3. equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
Specific entry requirements
A qualified applicant has the equivalent of 90 credits in economics and has successfully completed second-cycle studies in business administration, or who has attained the same qualifications outside of Sweden or by previously obtaining an equivalent degree. Under special circumstances, the faculty board may exempt an applicant from fulfilling special qualification requirements.
Employment
An application for admission to third-cycle studies is at the same time an application for employment on a doctoral studentship. The employment is for no longer than the equivalent to a maximum of four years full time studies. Doctoral students will have the opportunity to be engaged in teaching and/or administrative tasks at the institution. These tasks may be equivalent to no more than 20 % of full-time and, in such cases, the length of the doctoral studies will be extended accordingly. The provisions relating to employment on a doctoral studentship are stated in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, Sections 1-7. The first date of employment is September 1, 2016.
