Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.

Job description
Future climate scenarios predict increasing surface temperatures, decreased salinity, and changes in wind-driven upwelling in the Baltic Sea that will likely induce significant changes in phytoplankton dynamics. While anthropogenic nutrient input is set to decrease in the future, changes in the timing and the intensity of seasonal upwelling (internal loading) may increase the availability of nutrients and trigger more algal blooms. We are seeking a doctoral student for a project examining the connection between nutrients in coastal and offshore environments and the composition and structure of the phytoplankton community. The observations will be used to establish links between the response and adaptation of phytoplankton and consequences in terms of food web efficiency, and pelagic-benthic coupling. The potential cascading effect of internal loading on organic matter budget/fluxes will also be assessed. The work will include a combination of laboratory cultivation experiments and field studies. Microbial and molecular tools will be used. This study is part of a larger multidisciplinary project that seeks to understand diversity, ecology and physiology of microbial plankton communities within a climate change perspective.

The research will be conducted in collaboration with other scientists within the framework of the Strong Research Environment ECOCHANGE and the Centre for Ecology and Evolution in Microbial model Systems (EEMiS) within Linnaeus University that comprises expertise in ecology, evolution, and microbiology.

According to the Higher Education Ordinance a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies.
