Location:
Department of Conservation

The Department of Conservation offers professional degree programs and conducts research that focuses on cultural heritage issues, the built environment, craftsmanship, and conservation. The department operates in two different locations, Gothenburg and Mariestad. In Gothenburg we offer degree programs for building preservationists, conservators, and leaders in the fields of sloyd and traditional handicrafts. In Mariestad we offer programs in building construction, garden, and landscaping crafts. A key to our success is collaboration-among different areas of expertise within the department, and between the department and the surrounding national and international communities. Conservation requires expertise in a broad field of knowledge that includes subjects in the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Conservation research has developed in a number of different areas and themes, including cultural heritage processes, the built environment, urban issues, landscapes, planning, management, preservation, documentation, craftsmanship, and design. Job assignments

The doctoral student who holds this position shall pursue a doctoral degree. The degree program comprises 240 credits, including coursework (minimum 60 credits) as well as a dissertation (minimum 120 credits). The working languages will be Swedish and English. The position may also include teaching and/or administrative work in the department, maximum 20% of full time. The addition of such responsibilities will confer a commensurate extension of the contract length for the position.

This doctoral student position is linked to the research project Roots en Route: Heritage politics on the garden market, which is funded by the Swedish Research Council. The overarching purpose of this research project is to explore how cultural heritage today is produced and articulated in various formal and informal markets for garden-related products and services. According to the project grant, the doctoral student's dissertation is to address these issues, with particular focus on how contemporary alternative garden movements (such as community gardens and guerilla gardening) are involved in and influence different kinds of markets, and how conceptions of cultural heritage, history, and authenticity come to the fore in these contexts. Work in the project is conducted within an interdisciplinary research group, and the doctoral student will develop her or his thesis in collaboration with the rest of the project group. For further information about the research project, go to http://conservation.gu.se/english/research/on-going-projects/roots-en-route--heritage-politics-on-the-garden-market-.

The expectation for the holder of a doctoral position is that the student shall develop such expertise and skill as required to independently conduct research in conservation, and to contribute to the development of knowledge in the field by authoring and defending a scientific thesis for the doctoral dissertation. After graduation, the doctoral student is expected to be able to translate the scientific skills and expertise developed in our program into continued research or qualified professional work.

Eligibility
To qualify for a position in the doctoral program, applicants must have a graduate-level degree in the field of conservation; or completed at least 240 credits of coursework, at least 60 of which are at an advanced level in the field of conservation; or in some other way attained an equivalent level of expertise relevant to successfully completing the doctoral degree program. Prior study in relevant fields to conservation will be counted. Thus an educational background in, for example, ethnology, cultural studies, human ecology, landscape planning, or service management, depending on the focus of that work, may be considered relevant as qualification for this position.

Assessment

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for education on a doctoral level are given in the Swedish Council for Higher Education's directive SFS 1993:100, chapter 5.

The selection of candidate is based upon the correspondence between prior education and the proposed thesis project, the relevance of the proposed project, and the applicant's ability to successfully complete the doctoral program at the Department of Conservation.

Research will be conducted within an interdisciplinary project, and the applicant's ability to collaborate, communicate, and organize is a qualifying merit. We are seeking a highly motivated person with an interest in research, cultural theory perspectives and heritage issues. We welcome but do not require specialized expertise in the field of gardens. Experience from independent research work and cultural analysis is a merit, and so is relevant professional work experience.

The following documents are to be enclosed in the application:

1. An attested list of qualifications (CV), and contact information for two references.

2. Cover letter explaining the applicant's motivation for applying.

3. Reflection on the doctoral thesis project: an essay (maximum 2500 words) that presents your reflections on the chosen research topic and possible theoretical and methodological approaches.

4. Master's thesis, published work (maximum 3), and other supporting documents you wish to attach.

Candidates may be selected for an interview.

Employment
The employment is temporary for four years at 100%, and starts September 1st or as agreed. It is placed at the Department of Conservation in Gothenburg.
