The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry and food science. The Department has a strong profile in materials chemistry and its application in the development of biomaterials, catalysts and sensors, and is the host department for the University's centre for research excellence in Biomaterials Chemistry and is a partner in the University's Knowledge Environment - Advanced Materials.

Employment: Employment as a doctoral student is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance (HF) chapter 5 § 7. The total employment period shall not be longer than the equivalent of four years of full-time postgraduate study.

Enrollment in: Chemistry Placement city: Kalmar, Sweden

Job description
Linnaeus University, Department of Chemistry and Biomedical Sciences, is searching for applicants for a 4-year full-time Ph.D. position in Chemistry within the Bioorganic & Biophysical Chemistry research Laboratory (BBCL). The position entails research education up to the award of a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry.

PhD studentship: Hierarchical materials in chemical catalysis and analysis
The successful applicant's research activities shall be primarily focused on the development of nanostructured polymeric materials and their use for catalyzing the formation of C-C bonds and for protein recognition. This project is related to ongoing projects funded by the Swedish Research Council and Swedish Knowledge Foundation. The materials developed shall be subsequently incorporated into miniaturized formats for lab-on-a-chip applications. The student's work shall involve synthetic organic chemistry, and the use of a range of techniques for the characterization and study of the materials developed; e.g. NMR, DLS, LC, QCM, XPS, SEM/TEM, MS, SS-/TR-fluorescence spectroscopies. The aims of the project are:

• Development of C-C bond-forming reaction methodologies
• Development of protein/peptide-selective polymers
• The synthesis of nanostructured polymeric materials (nanoparticles and nanowires) incorporating catalytic or protein-recognizing features
• Assessment of the potential of these materials in lab-on-a-chip devices

According to the Higher Education Ordinance, a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies. An appointee may, however, work to a limited extent with other institutional activities, such as education, research, artistic development or administration.
