Linnaeus University in the Småland region of southern Sweden is situated primarily in two towns- Kalmar and Växjö, and consists of a creative and international knowledge environment promoting curiosity, creativity, companionship and utility. The Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences at the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, Linnaeus University is looking for suitably qualified candidate who is highly interested and motivated to carry out research education leading to a Ph.D. in the field of Environmental Sciences.

Job description

Surface waters and groundwater are very important resources for our society. Human activities such as agriculture, industry and surface disposal of materials may cause contamination of those resources. Agriculture, in particular, may alter the natural characteristics of soils causing lixiviation of substances that will in turn, reach surface waters and groundwater.
The Ph.D. project will focus on the fundamental processes of groundwater and surface water contamination related to human activities (e.g., agriculture, industry, etc) and possible proposition of mitigation actions. It will involve fieldwork, laboratory activities, and/or numerical modelling of surface and groundwater systems and dispersion of contaminants. Case studies will be defined with the candidate based on availability of data and resources, and will be develop in Sweden and/or abroad.

According to the Higher Education Ordinance, a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies. An appointee may, however work, to a limited extent with education, research, artistic development, and administration. However, before a doctoral degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20% of a full-time post.

Requirements

A person fulfils the general entry requirements if he/she

• Has been awarded a degree on second-cycle level (Geology, Geochemistry, Engineering, Environmental Sciences or equivalent)
• Completed the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which 60 credits on second-cycle level, or
• in other way, in Sweden or abroad, has acquired principally equivalent knowledge.

Specific requirements

• Solid background in geosciences, environmental sciences, geochemistry, mathematics or equivalent.
• An excellent level of English language (written and spoken).

Assessment grounds

• Experience with numerical modelling tools (PHREEQC, GWB or other geochemistry tool).
• The will to participate of fieldwork and/or laboratory activities.
• The ability to solve problems, work independently, and interact in a research group.

Employment: The employment as a doctoral student is limited according to chapter 5, § 7 of the Higer Education Ordinance. The total employment period may not be longer than the equivalent full-time postgraduate studies of four years.
